Manufacturing
The Mechanic
In manufacturing, the factory floor is only part of the process. Every vehicle on the road today is as much a technology experience as it is a physical one, with a sprawling digital ecosystem and software powering it. As this manufacturer accelerated its cloud and DevOps modernization efforts, it found that its operating model couldn't keep up. Teams across regions were struggling to support a growing mix of cloud platforms, developer environments, and applications. The technology was capable, but somebody had to take the wheel and steer things straight.
Stalling Out
The current cloud and DevOps environment had reached a dead end in regional workarounds and reactive support.
Lack of Standardization. Automation practices varied across teams. That made it harder to reuse what worked and difficult to establish a common standard for operational readiness.
Visibility Only in the Rearview. Data was monitored, but it wasn't connected to the workflows that teams used to investigate and resolve incidents. Without a shared view of system health and incident trends, support teams were often left in the dust, piecing together the story after the fact.
Manual Work. Because of all this, routine tasks like provisioning, configuration, and maintenance were taking up engineering time. Each manual handoff only added to the friction, not to mention invited yet another opportunity for variation.
In manufacturing, it helps when everyone knows their role on the assembly line, as well as how to adjust or fix a problem when something’s going wrong. The same was true of the client’s technology. It needed clearer ownership, defined escalation paths, and ITIL-aligned change and incident processes that could work across a growing global organization without slowing delivery to a crawl. That would take a partner who could connect cloud engineering, site reliability engineering, and service management into one practical operating model, then help run it.
Under the Hood
This engagement aligned with two areas of AHEAD’s expertise.
- Operational Excellence: Establishing the governance, metrics, and workflows that turned day-to-day operations into a source of business value.
- Platform & Workload Modernization: Creating a cloud operating model that could support a complex, global digital ecosystem and its underlying services.
The work unfolded across three phases:
Advise
AHEAD and the client began by reviewing the current state to identify where manual effort and inconsistent ownership were creating risk. This meant clarifying roles and escalation paths, defining operational readiness, and aligning incident, change, and request processes to ITIL practices.
Why the Groundwork Mattered: The client turned a vast collection of regional practices into a single model that would serve as the blueprint for the next phase of cloud and DevOps.
Build
AHEAD then began implementing automation frameworks for provisioning, configuration, and recurring maintenance, which reduced the amount of repetitive work. Runbooks documented procedures. Event correlation connected signals to better response workflows. Monitoring tools and dashboards provided a single view of platform health, so teams had better insights into incident patterns and performance trends, without having to search for them across disconnected systems.
How It Came to Life: At the center of the model was a Cloud & DevOps Operations Center (CDOC) which made cloud operations, site reliability engineering, observability, and IT service management all a part of the same operating backbone.
Run
AHEAD has continued to support the environment through a blended global operations model, with recurring service reviews that flag where the client can improve next. The design has essentially created a feedback loop: incident trends inform new automation; recurring escalations can point to new opportunities; and metrics help leaders measure reliability and efficiency. And that kind of automated repetition is something any manufacturer can appreciate.
How It Kept Delivering: The client's new model was designed to mature alongside its business.
A Smoother Ride
The new model has already delivered significant improvements.
Faster Recovery. The support backlog was reduced by 70% within 60 days of go-live.
Improved Resolution. AHEAD-developed standard operating procedures resolved 95% of incidents; 85% were resolved by Tier 1 support. Engineering teams could finally stop chasing repeat issues and more time improving the platform.
Global Growth. ITSM, SRE, application, and cloud operations teams worked from the shared process and governance of the DevOps model, which could be extended across regions, business units, and workloads.
What’s Next
The client is currently exploring intelligent observability and AI-driven capabilities, in order to better identify patterns and turn reactive response into predictive prevention. With its new operating model, the client can keep refining cloud operations, improving cost efficiency, and scaling without the same old friction. AHEAD brings the cloud, workflows, and people into the same conversation. When software can reach from the engineering bench all the way to the customer’s hands, operational excellence can't be a side project.
