PowerScale InsightIQ Implementation for a Global Law Firm
Enhancing Visibility and Performance Across File Storage Environments
The Attorney
Law firms run on information. Firms are reviewing thousands upon thousands of files of cases, research, correspondence, and records, which all need to be available the moment someone needs them. For this global law firm, it counted on Dell PowerScale's enterprise storage platform for its high volume of digital case files and research. The platform was doing its job as far as finding the right information. On the technical side, though, the firm lacked a motivation as far as the platform's performance, capacity, and or workload behavior.
Buried in Discovery
There was plenty of data, but it took sifting carefully through it to find useful evidence for this particular business case.
No Single Operational View. The client wanted one centralized analytics platform to review cluster health, I/O performance, and capacity usage. Limited visibility into individual workloads made it hard to adjust uneven performance or optimize where it would matter most.
Limited Historical Context. The firm also didn't have trend analysis to track how workloads and capacity had changed over time. That made it hard to plan for future storage needs or for potential issues on the horizon.
Reactive Troubleshooting. All of this meant that whenever performance concerns surfaced, administrators had to assemble the facts across multiple sources. Discovery was taking too long.
Lawyers in particular understand the value of a good partner. To win this particular fight, the firm needed someone it could work with to improve monitoring and visibility for its existing PowerScale environment.
A Star Witness
This engagement aligned with two areas of AHEAD India’s expertise.
- Platform & Workload Modernization: Improving performance visibility and operational intelligence for an expanding enterprise storage platform.
- Operational Excellence: Consistent and actionable monitoring, alerting, and reporting.
The work unfolded across three phases:
Advise
AHEAD began by putting the storage team on the witness stand. How healthy were the current clusters? Where was performance beginning to flatten? How quickly was capacity being consumed? And what would the environment need next quarter — or even next year?
Together, the teams identified the performance, latency, and capacity that administrators needed to understand the environment and report on it effectively. The approach also prioritized continuity, so active legal work wouldn't be interrupted during the process.
Why the Groundwork Mattered: Instead of generic dashboards, AHEAD designed a tailored approach for the client's exact storage needs.
Build
AHEAD then installed and configured InsightIQ on a dedicated virtual machine. This was the monitoring layer that would operate alongside PowerScale OneFS. AHEAD set up the solution with FQDN and DNS configurations, for easy data collection across multiple domains.
The monitoring layer came with built-in performance dashboards, reporting views, and alerts. Issues were surfaced sooner. Historical data retention gave the firm a better understanding of current trends, so it could use them to forecast future growth.
How It Came to Life: The insight layer was connected to the storage management systems already in place. The firm didn't have to choose between visibility and stability.
Run
Administrators could monitor cluster performance and investigate alerts and emerging trends. Teams also had reliable methods for reporting and analysis.
How It Kept Delivering: Storage conversations could start becoming strategic, based on real use and demand.
The Verdict
The firm now has a more informed, proactive operating model.
Proactive Capacity. Real-time analytics and historical data mean capacity is no longer a matter of guesswork.
Improved Troubleshooting. Tailored dashboards and automated alerting have enabled faster investigation and response.
Better Workload Decisions. Better visibility into individual workloads can support targeted performance optimization.
What’s Next
The firm is looking to integrate its PowerScale monitoring with ServiceNow for centralized alert management and quarterly health assessments. Visibility should be a habit. With Dell PowerScale, InsightIQ, and AHEAD’s implementation expertise working together, the firm can better manage its expanding data footprint.
